European Central Bank Completes Preparations for the Digital Euro, Aiming for a 2026 H2 Launch
According to ECB communications, the preparatory work for the digital euro is complete and now awaits final sign‑off from EU authorities. Officials forecast a staged rollout in the second half of 2026, positioning the project as a cornerstone of European monetary modernization.
Christine Lagarde described the initiative as a strategic lever for a resilient financial framework in the digital era. She emphasized that the currency should underpin trust, efficiency, and cross‑border payments while reinforcing the central bank’s mandate to maintain price stability.
The ECB also pressed EU legislators to accelerate adoption of the Digital Euro Regulation, calling for regulatory alignment to accompany the rollout. The move aims to reduce friction for banks and firms while safeguarding security, privacy, and financial integrity across the single market.
