The growing fragmentation of the blockchain world has brought a new problem: individual networks do not naturally communicate with each other. Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain or Avalanche function as separate cosystems, between which assets cannot be freely transferred. It is exactly this gap that blockchain bridges fill – technologies that enable the transfer of tokens, data, and functions across different blockchains. Without bridges, users would be locked into a single chain, significantly limiting the development of DeFi, NFTs, and multi-chain applications. Bridges have thus become one of the fundamental building blocks of today's crypto ecosystem. How bridges work in practice A typical scenario is simple: the user holds assets on one blockchain but wants to use them on another. For example, moving ETH from Ethereum to the Solana ecosystem. A bridge facilitates this transfer using several different mechanisms. The most widespread is the lock-and-mint model. Originally, tokens are locked on the source blockchain and a wrapped version of them is created on the target chain. When returning back, the wrapped tokens are burned and the original assets are unlocked.
