Although we are not sure when the interest rate cuts will happen, the impact of the Fed on macro liquidity will also continue to affect investors' expectations for the crypto market. In addition, the number of locked positions in DeFi is expected to increase slowly in 2023. Regardless of the decline in the value of popular blockchain tokens, the number of active users and new wallet addresses on chains like Polygon, Ethereum, and BSC has remained on the rise. As more DeFi blue chips slowly transform into the ecosystem's infrastructure, the lock-up volume and TVL of DeFi are expected to continue to rise in 2023. The focus of our BGB Sail Series is on the monthly performance of BGB, with a recap of the market situation at the end of each month. BGB Sail: November Edition can be found here. Market Summary The aftermath of FTX continued into December, with global search interest in crypto topics further declined: searches for Ethereum remained below 15 searches/day, while it’s below 45 searches/day for Bitcoin. DeFi’s popularity swayed a bit downwards, but the overall sentiment towards the topic was still strong. That is understandable as DeFi seems to be the solution for cases like FTX. When we talk about DeFi, it’s simply a must to mention Total Value Locked (TVL). TVL shows that most assets were locked on Ethereum, unsurprisingly. However, Tron has been rising to the 2nd place, competing fiercely against BNB Chain ever since May-June (around the Terra/LUNA collapse). And in December, Tron’s TVL has comfortably surpassed that of BNB Chain. Aggregated TVL of all chains didn’t change much in December. Source: The Block The Top 3 categories by TVL have always been decentralized exchanges (DEXs), Lending and Collateralised Debt Position (CDP), but CDP is gradually catching up with Lending. In November, the ratio between CDP and Lending varied between 0.71-0.74 and has increased to 0.75-0.78 in the last month of 2022. What does it mean? CDP is the func-tion of MakerDAO that allows users to lock their cryptocurrencies to generate DAI. An increase in the TVL of CDP means that more DeFi users, and crypto users in general, could be switching to DAI a.k.a. the true decentralized stablecoin. Trust in centralized exchanges (CEXs) hasn’t been restored, resulting in a sustained outflow of Bitcoin from CEXs. Data from CryptoQuant shows that Bitcoin reserves from all exchanges dropped to the lowest levels since 2020 in December, with the lowest recorded hitting 2.140 million BTC across nearly 40 exchanges. Netflows were not as bad as in June but it definitely reflected a mounting concern of investors as the outflows perpetuated. Source: CryptoQuant BGB Performance in December Exchange tokens’ value didn’t show much change in December; the only one with a small breakout is OKB. BGB experienced a minor loss (-7.5%), but demand for BGB was legitimately persistent; this is the only token with a one-digit decrease in monthly volume. All other exchange tokens saw at least a 30% decline in volume, no matter if their value went up or down. That is how reliable BGB appears to be as an exchange token, well, BGB investors must consider the token a good keep, otherwise they would have come rushing to dump BGB, right? It’s important to highlight that in the extreme case of OKB, volume still plunged despite the positive returns. Trading interest should actually go up when the asset’s value increases, because people want to get it before it’s too late (though diamond hands want to hold and wait for better prices). BGB Shed Only 2.75% In A Red Week In a week where both stocks and crypto took a dive, BGB managed to withstand the bloodbath better than most digital assets, second to Bitcoin (-1.86%) only. Meanwhile, even ETH saw a nearly 6% decrease (with a volatility of 35.8%) and BNB declined by 15.69%. Negative market conditions usually turn out to be a time for BGB to shine - with its resilience! A 75bps hike didn’t seem justified, and the Federal Reserve (FED) ended up raising interest rates by 0.5%. However, the FED is most likely to remain hawkish in the next month because “reducing inflation is likely to require a sustained period of below-trend growth” and “the historical record cautions strongly against prematurely loosening policy”, as said by FED Chair in his remarks. In short, the FED “will stay the course, until the job is done”, causing investors and markets to react fearfully. On Thursday (December 15) only, more than US$878 billion got vaporised from the U.S. stock market, and US$21,839,626,708 from crypto global market cap. Source: WatcherGuru However, there were still several pieces of good news to cheer up the distressed market. Beginners will soon find it easier to get onboard with crypto thanks to the newly announced partnership between PayPal and MetaMask. The current on-ramp options for MetaMask users are MoonPay, Wyre and Transak, but with a Paypal integration, MetaMask can expand their services to 430 million Paypal accounts all around the world. WisdomTree Investments is one of the best when it comes to exchange-traded funds and other exchange-traded products with US$76.2 billion in AUM (as of July 31, 2022). The asset manager has received approval from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) last week to launch nine new funds that all use blockchain technology to “digitise ownership of each fund’s shares”. On the other side of the globe, investors have welcomed the first Bitcoin and Ether ETFs on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange with US$79 million raised in its first trading session on Friday (December 16). Depeg, exploit and withdrawal suspension Algo stablecoins are expected to be the backbone of DeFi, but all models until now appear to be highly susceptible to losing peg. USDD, an algorithmic stablecoin that emerges after the LUNA/UST crash, lost its peg last Monday and dipped as low as US$0.970245 before recovering to US$0.98 for the whole week. USDD relies on an improved design of UST (now USTC); it is backed by a reserve system consisting of TRX, BTC, USDT and USDC. This is not the first time that USDD saw a deviation from its peg: the chart below shows that USDD has lost the Dollar peg three times since its inception (in June, November and last week). Source: CoinGecko Another L1 ecosystem had to deal with a different issue. The 6th biggest DApp on Solana by unique active wallets, Raydium, was hacked last Friday. Dev team reported that the attacker took control of the DEX’s admin address, thus was able to syphon approximately US$4.4 million in assets out of liquidity pools. The team is offering the attacker a 10% bounty in the hope of getting back the stolen funds. Some CEXs were, on the other hand, getting roasted because of withdrawal difficulties. Some Binance users reported that their withdrawals took quite some time to complete or not completed after Nansen publicised that the 24H outflow from the exchange hit US$3 billion on December 13. The exchange replied that it was a temporary halt for USDC. And OKEx didn’t process any withdrawals in almost seven hours yesterday because of a cloud hardware failure from Alibaba in the Hong Kong area. Fresh capital flows One juicy news of the week is the sale of the Trump Digital Trading Cards. The 45th U.S. President announced the launch of this NFT collection on December 15, which was sold out in less than 12 hours after release. Originally priced at US$99, the floor price of the 45,000-piece collection has reached an all-time high of 0.586 Ethereum (ca. US$695) and is still trading at a floor price of 0.3 ETH, data from CoinGecko shows. Despite the public support from the former U.S. President, the collection is not “owned, managed or controlled by Donald J. Trump”, according to their website. Market Summary Undoubtedly, when we talk about November, the first thing to appear in our mind now is the collapse of FTX - an event that has shaken the whole crypto industry to the core. We want to cover details about it in a separate reading, so stay tuned and subscribe to us to not miss anything! Now, before FTX, Bitcoin prices had been clinging nicely to the US$20,000 mark - activities were within the normal range across markets - spot, futures, even ETFs. Source: CryptoCompare Then Sam Bankman-Fried, his troubled exchange and faulty hedge fund Alameda Research entered the picture. A timeline of the FTX story Alameda was a major funding source for several crypto startups, while FTX was home for big players, market makers, lenders, well, you name it. FTX in liquidity crunch and consequently insolvency means that many billions of dollars in digital assets can no longer come back to their original owners. After FTX(dot)com halted withdrawals, we began to see a crash. Source: Coinalyze See how BTC prices plummeted to 15K-something (that’s a decrease of approximately 25%) in less than 2 days? Far worse, it triggered more than US$1 million in liquidations on centralised exchanges within November 8 - November 9, turning on the ‘extremely bearish’ mode. Funding rate quickly shot up to -0.033% on Binance (the highest for CEXs) and -0.107% on dYdX on the second funding cycle of November 9 to -0.119% on Binance and -0.171% on dYdX on the last funding cycle of the same day. The trust issue that arises with the fall of FTX caused a huge outflow of funds from exchanges. Data from CryptoQuant shows it reached levels similar to when Terra (LUNA) tumbled, if not higher. That could also explain why there were more Bitcoin addresses with more than 1 BTC holdings. Source: CryptoQuant The effect, of course, also spread to the ETFs market. On November 9, the aggregated volume for two most important Bitcoin ETFs, ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (NYSEARCA:BITO) and ProShares Bitcoin Short Strategy ETF (NYSEARCA:BITI), skyrocketed to nearly US$1 billion. Source: Eric Balchunas As Bitcoin dominance remained above 40% since August, the global crypto market cap and altcoin prices took a nosedive because of this event. From the all-time high of US$2.92 trillion and the recent new normal of US$900 billion-US$1 trillion, the market capitalisation of all cryptocurrencies sunk to US$793 billion. Source: Macrobond, Morgan Stanley Research From a macro perspective, we saw signs of a possible dovish move from the Federal Reserve (FED) as the U.S. CPI experienced a slight relief. Compared to September, October's figure demonstrates a 0.4% growth, that is, a 7.7% YoY increase. The expectations were 0.6% MoM and 7.9% YoY, therefore (we thought) we had good reason to be bullish. Then the non-farm payroll figures came in after FTX, with the employment increasing by 263,000 instead of the forecasted 200,000. We are currently in the blackout period before the final rate decision of 2022 tomorrow (December 14), so take some quiet time and zoom out before deciding on any move.
