Week 3: The Moon Is Waning As we explained before, after spot Bitcoin ETFs in the U.S. there's supposed to be chaos. Bitcoin prices went from nearly US$49,000 on January 11 after the long-awaited ETF approval to US$41,500 at the end of Sunday (January 21), which is equivalent to a loss of US$7,400 or 15%. First off, let's greet our new friends with the warmest welcome: this is crypto, where Bitcoin prices oftentimes drop after you grab some. Recall the last time you opened your phone and FOMO bought Bitcoin because of ETF approval rumours? The momentum kept going up until the actual launch; it's now time for active investors to realise their profits a.k.a. ditch BTC for gains. They can be short-term traders who executed their 'buy the rumour, sell the news' strategy with perfect timing or BTC holders who want to scoop some quick profits. The thing is, many, especially new retail traders, have problems regulating their emotions and tend to place buy orders in fear of missing a life-changing opportunity, and thereby creating the demand for a particular group of profit-seekers to unload their holdings. And the magnitude of this collective selling act is usually so great that it impacts Bitcoin in a negative way that causes panic and further brings down prices. A prime example of that is the recent GBTC dumping, which is covered here: Understanding the Recent GBTC Sell-Off: Causes and Impacts on Bitcoin Price. Does this downward spiral mean the end of Bitcoin and crypto as a whole? There're some factors to consider: despite the Bitcoin price plunging, total net flow last week into 11 spot Bitcoin ETFs still amounts to US$363,643,000 and US$85,470,000 into the three biggest futures ETFs (BITO, BITI, BITX), and the fee war between spot Bitcoin ETFs. No matter before or after its conversion to a spot Bitcoin ETF, Grayscale Bitcoin Trust is well-known for its hefty management fees. It's therefore justifiable to interpret the exodus of GBTC investors as the relocation of capital into other funds. However, the damage is done: Bitcoin fell to its lowest levels since early December 2023, net flow into spot ETFs decreased by almost 50%, all spot ETF prices saw red for seven consecutive days, the combined volume of all spot ETFs from January 16 - January 19 is only slightly higher than that of the first two days and the volume of all crypto stocks declined by more than half, the average bleeding rate of miners is 12.5%. We're no longer in a phase of intense Greed - the market sentiment is now back to Neutral at 55/100. The new narratives that serve as hopium for the upcoming months are spot Ethereum ETFs, Bitcoin halving, options on spot Bitcoin ETFs, and leveraged spot Bitcoin ETFs. Again, don't forget that FOMO is never a friend of any trader/investor. The weekly high fell to US$0.64 while the weekly low rose to US$0.59, but this low was out of the Bollinger Bands and rebounded right back within, hence the correction trend should not last long. Indicators are pointing to a buildup of momentum: a lot of room for BGB prices to increase, spread tightened, volume is down. As mentioned above, BGB volume saw a decline of nearly 20% despite prices going back to US$0.60, so there's no short-term FOMO buyers here. Investors are apparently waiting for a price breakout (or more - see how 2023 turned out for BGB diamond hands?), which shall come with the stabilisation of Bitcoin prices, especially when a relationship between BGB and Bitcoin seems to have somewhat developed in the last few weeks. Extra Volatile Grayscale's win over the SEC in court has paved the way for the long-awaited spot Bitcoin ETF approval in the U.S . And it's not just Grayscale's conversion application but all 11 applications as a whole! Here's the name and ticker of all 11 spot Bitcoin ETFs that began trading last Thursday (January 11, 2024): • Bitwise Bitcoin ETF: BITB • VanEck Bitcoin Trust: HODL • Grayscale Bitcoin Trust: GBTC • Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin: FBTC • Blackrock's iShares Bitcoin Trust: IBIT • Franklin Bitcoin ETF: EZBC • 21Shares & Ark Bitcoin ETF: ARKB • Invesco Galaxy Bitcoin ETF: BTCO • Hashdex Bitcoin Futures ETF: DEFI • WisdomTree Bitcoin Fund: BTCW • Valkyrie Bitcoin Fund: BRRR There are VanEck (HODL) and Hashdex (DEFI) whose names sound very.. dedicated, while the rest mostly follow the issuers' name standardisation. These 11 ETFs achieved nearly US$7.7 billion in trading volume in only two days, with Bitwise being the winner of Day 1 with US$625.8 million in net flow . So spot Bitcoin ETF approval is a good thingy, and prices must be up only, right? Why the red? Besides, remember that in crypto markets there's something called perps (perpetual futures contracts ), which have no expiry and track the underlying asset's spot prices closely. This is a good time for whales to 'kill' the long orders before attempting to clear the short ones as well, since many still tend to trade with emotions and the moment they see prices decrease, they'll react with a high-risk short. This is not to say that we shall never trade during these volatile times, but better time your trade and up your skills to minimise the risk of liquidations. There's another reason for the bleeding across all markets last week: the latest U.S. CPI data release . Expected was 3.2% YoY for the headline CPI and 3.8% for the core CPI, but the actual numbers are 3.4% and 3.9%, respectively. This means the FED's recent dovish pauses will likely come to an end, or at the bare minimum, rate cuts should not begin in as early as March. However, data from FedWatch Tool suggests that there are indeed more investors looking for the FED's lowering interest rates starting from March: 70% from 60.9% as of last week . BGB Hit A Local Low As mentioned last week, BGB was about to reach a local low, and it did at US$0.424916 on Sunday, October 15. We’re already seeing the bounceback and supporting indicators thenceforth; it’s safe to assume that the correction is over. This short-lived decline in BGB prices did raise the corresponding volatility, but it’s still pretty modest compared to that of major coins: the only one with decreasing volatility over the last few days is Bitcoin, whose figure remained above BGB’s until the very last day of the week. With XRP losing its appeal from Judge Torres’ decision in July, its volume is also affected in a negative way, which of course excludes periods of sell-offs. BGB’s volume to market cap ratio is sticking to the 0.03 mark, and 7D volume was almost unchanged (+1.9%) despite lower price levels. That is, holders have seen the token’s long-term potential and temporary losses are nothing compared to the expected return it can bring them, thus the diamond hands. The headline CPI, which includes the volatile energy and food prices, is a bit higher than the expected 3.6% YoY and 0.3% MoM, therefore stock markets had no choice but to end their four-day winning streak. As for crypto stocks, the only to record a positive week is understandably ProShares’ Bitcoin short strategy ETF (BITI), though the overall trend is some idleness in this sector. The biggest crypto stocks (BITO, COIN, MSTR) saw the biggest drops in volume, ranging from 21% to 33%. On FedWatch Tool, the odds of FED’s raising interest rates in their next meeting has increased to 6.5%, intensifying the competition for capital even between risky assets. The global market cap on October 15’s midnight (UTC) is recorded at US$1,089,550,687,783, accompanied by a lower fear greed index of 47/100. Even the opening price of Bitcoin today is 2.7% lower than last Monday (October 09), which was already inching lower from October 02’s US$27,976.8. However, there are many reasons for bulls to be optimistic: • The deadline for the SEC to appeal the court’s decision on Grayscale Bitcoin ETF has expired, meaning the agency can’t reject Grayscale’s application to convert their trust into an ETF anymore. Yet the agency, notoriously known for its deadline extension for crypto ETFs, still has the final say on when and if the current applications are fault-free. • A proposal by ZeroSync’s core contributor Robin Linus sparks the hope that smart contracts will soon come to the Bitcoin blockchain, i.e. dApps are coming to Bitcoin. • Paul Tudor publicly voiced his support for Bitcoin, citing “I can’t love stocks, but I love Bitcoin and gold”. And take this light-heartedly: Jim Cramer said “Mr. Bitcoin is about to do down big”, so we can’t not bet on the opposite, right? BGB Sail: April Edition

Our BGB Sail Series provides an in-depth analysis of BGB performance, together with a recap of the market situation at the end of each month. Data from The Block shows that the monthly volume of Bitcoin futures on CEXs went down by nearly 30% to US$901 billion, while the Open Interest of such contracts decreased slightly by 1%. However, it is worth noting that while the aforementioned drop in BTC futures volume didn't cancel out the so-called market progress we've been witnessing since the new year, April spot volume is only slightly higher than December 2022’s levels. These figures are still way above those of the bull run in 2020, though. Source: lars0x Does it mean that people are, once again, turning their back on crypto? Sorry sceptics, the answer is a firm no. A research by the Deutsche Digital Assets discloses an annual growth rate of approximately 87% for verified crypto users, with the latest stand of 420 million as of April. Don't skip the term ‘ID-verified' a.k.a KYC’ed; the majority of crypto activities take place on-chain, where anonymity is valued (almost) above anything else, hence the actual adoption rate must definitely be higher. Source: Deutsche Digital Assets Besides Bitcoin and Ethereum, USDT should be the one token owned/acquired by most crypto beginners. Why? Because it is easier to get on-/off-ramps, and USDC is most popular in the U.S. Source: Kaiko Analytics Being good at its job as a stablecoin, USDC has been more successful at sticking to its peg since late March. On the other hand, USDT has been trading at a premium on CEXs for the last two months, meaning general market participants are holding USDT in higher regard than USDC. After the collapse of Terra (LUNA) as well as a prolonged bear market in 2022, USDT is the only one to have regained its pre-Terra market cap of over US$80 billion. It still dominates the stablecoin market, especially with BUSD dead as Binance is under scrutiny and TUSD, the stablecoin promoted by Binance, showing liquidity weaknesses with its depeg on May 02 as a result of heavy borrowing pressure in DeFi. On a side note, the European Parliament had voted on the passing of their landmark Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) on April 20, 2023, with 517 votes in favour, 38 against, and 18 abstentions. This allows MiCA to take effect in around Q3 2024 and EU to score a first-mover advantage when it comes to crypto regulation. The main focus of MiCA revolves around the oversight of crypto asset service providers (CASPs), which include any company that offers crypto and crypto services even if they are not the issuer of a token. NFTs and crypto lending are not explicitly covered by MiCA, but stricter stablecoin regulations are to be expected. Around the same time, the U.S. House of Representatives released a discussion draft bill on stablecoins with no official notice.
