Hinge’s latest AI tool assists singles in skipping dull introductory conversations
Hinge Introduces AI-Powered Conversation Starters
Many users on Hinge have grown frustrated with matches who simply like their profiles but never initiate a conversation. This often results in uncomfortable silences, leaving one person to shoulder the responsibility of breaking the ice. Instead of crafting engaging openers, some resort to repetitive greetings or uninspired small talk, such as the classic “How are you?”
To tackle this challenge, Hinge has launched a new feature called “Convo Starters.” Powered by artificial intelligence, this tool offers personalized suggestions to help users begin conversations more confidently.
With this update, when someone likes a profile, they’ll now see three custom conversation tips beneath each photo and prompt. The AI analyzes the details in a user’s profile and generates recommendations tailored to specific images or prompts. For instance, if a profile photo shows someone playing chess, Hinge might encourage starting a chat about favorite board games.

According to Hinge, the development of Convo Starters was driven by user feedback. Their research shows that 72% of Hinge members are more likely to consider a match when a like is paired with a message. Additionally, Hinge’s data indicates that users who comment along with their likes are twice as likely to secure a date.
This new addition builds on Hinge’s earlier AI-powered Prompt Feedback feature, which evaluates user prompts and provides suggestions to make them more detailed and engaging.
Despite these advancements, not everyone is comfortable with the integration of AI into dating apps. Many users, particularly those from Generation Z, feel uneasy about relying on AI for tasks like composing profile prompts or crafting responses. A Bloomberg Intelligence survey found that Gen Z is more hesitant about using AI in online dating compared to older age groups.
Hinge’s parent company, Match Group, is investing between $20 million and $30 million to further develop AI technologies for its platforms.
