How Titan OS Is Transforming Smart TV Revenue Models

As competition intensifies in the television industry, manufacturers are increasingly challenged to generate ongoing value from customers after the initial sale. With slimmer profit margins due to frequent discounts, TV brands are turning to collaborations with content providers, streaming platforms, and advertisers to recoup their investments.

This approach is central to the mission of Titan OS, a Barcelona-based company that delivers a smart TV operating system designed to maximize long-term customer value for TV manufacturers.

Major Funding Fuels Expansion

Titan OS recently announced a successful Series A funding round, securing €50 million (approximately $58 million) led by Highland Europe and supported by Mangrove Capital Partners. While the company did not disclose its total funding to date, it revealed that its 2023 seed round was also in the multi-million euro range.

Founders and Background

Established in 2023 by Jacinto Roca, Timothy Edwards, Miquel Barba, and Tobias Pfalzgraff, Titan OS benefits from a leadership team with deep industry experience. Roca, for example, previously launched the streaming service Wukai.tv, which was later acquired by Rakuten. The other co-founders have also held significant positions at Rakuten.

Reaching Millions of Users

Through strategic partnerships with brands like Phillips and JVC, Titan OS now reaches 18 million users, primarily in Europe and Latin America.

Enhancing Content Discovery

The platform is engineered to simplify the process of finding new shows and movies, addressing a growing challenge highlighted by Nielsen in 2023: viewers are spending more time searching for content. Titan OS leverages user data and an extensive content library to streamline discovery. Users can access a blend of traditional broadcast TV, their favorite streaming apps, and a variety of FAST (free ad-supported television) channels from Titan OS partners—all within the same interface.

Revenue Streams and Growth

  • FAST Channel Partnerships: Titan OS collaborates with numerous FAST services to help them connect with local audiences.
  • Advertising Opportunities: The platform offers advertising placements on TV home screens and during streaming, reaching millions of viewers. Content partners, especially those focused on live events and sports, are eager to tap into these advertising channels.
  • Shoppable Ads: Titan OS enables interactive ads, such as QR codes that viewers can scan to purchase products directly from their TV.

These initiatives have driven a tenfold increase in the company’s revenue over the past two years.

Shifting Industry Priorities

While some manufacturers, like Sony, continue to use their proprietary operating systems, they are increasingly open to integrating solutions like Titan OS to expand their FAST channel offerings. Industry reports indicate that advertising revenue is becoming more lucrative for TV makers than hardware sales. Titan OS COO Timothy Edwards supports this perspective:

“In the past, hardware sales were the main profit driver. Now, companies with their own operating systems often earn more from ongoing content and advertising than from selling the devices themselves. This marks a significant shift.”

Edwards further explained that Titan OS empowers TV brands to generate continuous revenue from content and advertising after the initial sale—something that is not yet standard across the industry.

Localized Content and Future Plans

To strengthen its presence in Europe, Titan OS is expanding its lineup of local-language, ad-supported channels tailored to different regions. Competing with platforms like Whale TV and Xperi’s TiVO, Titan OS now offers more than 100 channels in these markets.

The company employs 200 staff members across offices in Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Taipei. The latest funding will support growth in product development, sales, new partnerships, and advertising projects. Titan OS is focused on maintaining its rapid expansion and plans to seek additional investment next year.

Investor Perspective

Laurance Garrett, a partner at Highland Europe, compared Titan OS to WeTransfer—a previous investment by the firm that was acquired by Bending Spoons. He praised the company’s innovative advertising model layered atop its operating system, noting that Titan OS’s European roots provide a deep understanding of local markets, setting it apart from international competitors.
