According to information from the French government, Apple has alerted several people that their devices have been the focus of a spyware operation.

On Thursday, France’s national cybersecurity response agency stated that on September 3, Apple issued a fresh warning to users whose Apple devices might have been breached.

The cybersecurity agency explained that receiving a threat alert indicates that at least one device associated with a user’s iCloud account “has been singled out and may be at risk of compromise.”

It remains unknown how many people, either in France or elsewhere, got the September 3 notification, which spyware was involved, or when these breaches started.

A representative for Apple did not offer an immediate comment to TechCrunch’s questions.

Apple regularly warns users when their devices have been targeted and recommends that affected individuals reach out to Access Now’s digital security lab for assistance. Recently, Apple has sent such warnings to users in Iran, throughout Europe, in India, and in numerous other nations regarding mercenary spyware threats.

In 2021, reports indicated that French President Emmanuel Macron changed his phone after it was discovered that Pegasus spyware from NSO Group had targeted his device.
