U.S. Trade Representative Greer stated that the scope of Section 301 tariffs could be expanded as needed. Section 301 refers to the entirety of Sections 1301-1310 of the Comprehensive Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988, primarily aimed at protecting U.S. rights in international trade and retaliating against countries deemed to have "unreasonable" or "unfair" trade practices. Under this provision, the U.S. can investigate trade practices of other countries it considers "unfair," negotiate with the governments of those countries, and ultimately, the President can decide to take retaliatory measures such as raising tariffs, restricting imports, or suspending relevant agreements.
