Meta's Llama 4 boosts US position in AI competition
Meta’s latest AI model, Llama 4, has been hailed as a critical development in the global artificial intelligence race, with U.S. AI and crypto czar David Sacks asserting that it positions the United States as a leader in the field.
“For the US to win the AI race, we have to win in open source too, and Llama 4 puts us back in the lead,” Sacks stated on April 5.
Llama 4 is Meta’s most advanced AI lineup to date, featuring models like Llama 4 Scout and Llama 4 Maverick.
These models boast 17 billion active parameters, with Maverick utilising 128 expert systems for enhanced computational efficiency.
Meta claims these models outperform competitors such as GPT-4o and Gemini 2.0 Flash across benchmarks for reasoning, coding, and multimodal tasks.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has emphasised the transformative potential of Llama 4, describing it as a key step toward making open-source AI an industry standard.
The company has invested heavily in infrastructure to support its development, requiring ten times more computational power than its predecessor, Llama 3.
The release comes amid growing competition with Chinese AI organisations like DeepSeek, which have advanced rapidly in developing cost-efficient models.
Meta’s efforts aim to maintain its edge by integrating Llama 4 into applications such as WhatsApp and Instagram while also expanding partnerships with platforms like Hugging Face.
However, regulatory challenges persist.
Llama 4 is currently restricted in the European Union due to data privacy laws, and businesses with over 700 million monthly users must obtain special licenses to deploy it.
