Most institutions do not plan to trade cryptocurrencies

The results of a study by JP Morgan bank indicate that most institutions do not even plan to trade cryptocurrencies.

In January 2025, JP Morgan staff surveyed more than 4,200 institutional traders from 60 countries and Found out That:

  • 71% of them do not intend to buy and sell digital assets;
  • 13% already trade virtual currencies;
  • 16% plan to do this.

These statistics indicate low demand for cryptocurrencies from institutions, but there is a positive trend in this area. In particular, compared to 2024, the number of traders who traded digital assets increased by 44%, and the number of respondents who planned to buy cryptocurrencies increased by a third.

JP Morgan's head of digital markets, Eddie Wen, explained the increased interest in virtual currencies as follows:

Recent headlines suggest that the new [US President Donald Trump] administration is supporting the market, with recent changes lowering the barriers to entry into the digital asset industry that members of the traditional banking community face.

When talking about barriers, Wen primarily means cancellation of the rule , which required American banks to classify cryptocurrencies on their balance sheets as debt. This made financial institutions reluctant to store digital assets, and the leader in the US custody market was the crypto exchange Coinbase, not a major bank, as one might logically assume.

However, the famous crypto investor Robert Kiyosaki fears that Trump's policies will negatively affect the digital asset industry. In his opinion, the tariff war unleashed by Donald will lead to the collapse of the Bitcoin, gold and silver rates. If Kiyosaki's forecast comes true, institutional investors will be less willing to trade cryptocurrencies.
