U.S. indicts three in $3 million Evolved Apes NFT fraud case
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York has indicted Mohamed-Amin Atcha, Mohamed Rilaz Waleedh, and Daood Hassan for their alleged involvement in the Evolved Apes NFT 2021 scam. The country promised to develop a video game, but on the day of the fundraiser, anonymous developer Evil Ape disappeared, transferring 798 Ether (about $3 million). The case is seen as part of a “carpet-pulling” scam, in which developers sell NFTs or tokens that mean money and then suddenly shut down the project and disappear. According to statistics, since 2011, similar scams have resulted in losses of more than $1.45 million.
