X (formerly Twitter) cancels the NFT avatar feature for paid subscription users

X (formerly Twitter) cancels the NFT avatar feature for paid subscription users

2024/01/10 12:19

According to TechCrunch, X (formerly Twitter) led by Elon Musk released its grand vision for 2024 on Tuesday, which includes launching peer-to-peer payments and more AI-driven tools. In the process, the company quietly removed the feature that allowed paid subscribers to set NFTs as their profile avatars. This feature was initially introduced by the former management of Twitter in January 2022, allowing Twitter Blue subscribers to set NFTs minted on Ethereum (ERC-721 or ERC-1155 tokens) as their profile pictures displayed in hexagons. Users could click/tap on the profile picture to learn more about the NFT, including collection information, contract address, TokenID, and minting application. Now, X has removed all descriptions of this NFT profile picture feature from its X Premium support page. Previously, the description of this feature stated: "As a Premium subscriber, you can customize your profile and showcase the NFTs you own with a hexagonal profile picture on your account." Users who still have an NFT set as their profile picture currently retain the hexagonal avatar; however it is unclear whether X will eventually remove these avatars.
