How RWA Markets Work on Lighter - and Why They Won’t Repeat PAXG’s Problems RWA markets face one fundamental issue: tokenization. Tokenized assets depend on an issuer to maintain price parity - much like stablecoins. The Core Problem: Liquidity Liquidity remains the biggest challenge for tokenized assets. Even if you look at major stablecoins like USDC and USDT, their charts reveal price fluctuations of around ±3% that have persisted for first one years. Steadily this improved as MMs got more liquidity. And that’s for the 2 largest tokenized assets in existence. Now imagine scaling this problem up. There are tens of thousands of RWA assets worldwide. If all of them were moved onchain today, crypto traders would face huge liquidity risks - from price slippage to liquidation cascades. It creates "premium" for trading of RWA assets. Simply put, onchain liquidity is nowhere near sufficient to support the breadth of RWA markets. This is a fundamental flaw in how tokenized RWAs operate. ---------------- Lighter’s Approach: RWA Trading Without Tokenization Lighter takes a completely different approach. Instead of tokenizing assets, it builds markets based directly on real-world price data. Here’s how it works: 1. However, PAXG doesn’t tap into the true liquidity of the gold market. Instead, it relies solely on onchain liquidity - which is a fraction of the real market. 1. With only ~$130M in daily trading volume, PAXG’s liquidity was insufficient to absorb volatility - which led to the PAXG squeeze on October 16, 2025.
